Apple Reveals Winner of 50 Billionth App Download

Last Wednesday Apple revealed that its customers have now downloaded more than 50 billion applications from its iTunes App Store. The company promised to giveaway a $10,000 gift card to the winner, and last Thursday it revealed the lucky draw.

The winner was Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio. Ashmore downloaded “Say the Same Thing” an application developed by Space Inch, LLC.

“Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.”

Apple also reminded us on Thursday that the app store opened with just 500 applications back in July 2008, a year after the original iPhone made its debut. It’s now available in 155 countries and offers more than 850,000 applications, 350,000 of which are native to the iPad. Apple said the 50 billion download milestone does not include re-downloads or updates.
