Wi-Fi Button

Likely the most common user error here, and an understandable one given how easy it is to do accidentally, is disabling of Wi-Fi. Most smartphone models have quick button options that allow for Wi-Fi to be turned on and off with a single click – this might happen accidentally or while the phone is unlocked in a pocket, for instance.

If you’re unsure whether you’re connected, swipe down from the top of your screen (on both iPhone and Android models). This will bring you a menu of icons, including the Wi-Fi icon, which should be lit up and active – if it is not, toggle it on.

Airplane Mode

Down similar lines, there’s a chance your phone is in airplane mode. Again, this is generally single button that can activate this, and may happen accidentally even if you haven’t flown recently. Toggling off airplane mode is done in the exact same place as your Wi-Fi button.

Phone Update

In other cases, the issue is due to a required update to your phone’s operating system. If the phone isn’t set to automatically update here, you may have to manually approve this action. If you’ve already checked your basic buttons and haven’t found the culprit, check for a phone update as well.

Resets

And if all of the above options don’t work, and you’ve confirmed you’re within Wi-Fi range and should be able to connect, it’s time to consider resetting the phone. The first step here is a simple reset, which involves powering the phone down and then turning it back on, refreshing its basic memory.

If this does not work, you will have to perform a network settings reset. Go to your settings and under General, find Network Settings. There will be an option to either forget the current network or reset all network settings – try the former first, then the latter if that doesn’t work.
