Choosing Between Computer Repair and Replacement, Part 1

Aug 5, 2020

There are a number of different systems or pieces of equipment where both repair and replacement will be potential options when damage or wear-and-tear has taken place, with computers and laptops serving as excellent examples. Many computers experience issues that, while frustrating and inconvenient, do not render them unusable – should you be repairing these where possible, or looking to replace them? At FixIT Mobile, we’re proud to offer quality computer and laptop repair services to all our clients when such services are realistic and beneficial. But we aren’t here to take advantage of you, and we’ll be up-front and honest when certain issues with your computer or laptop might be so significant that a replacement is your best option. In this two-part blog series, we’ll take a look at a number of variables to keep in mind while making your choice between computer repair and replacement.

Age and Condition of the Machine

The first major factor here will be how old the machine is, and the precise level of condition its in. Newer computers are more likely to be experiencing issues based on minor software glitches or other updates that are required, while older models might be more prone to hardware concerns or even physical damage in some cases.

In addition, it’s important to think about the qualities of the machine and whether it’s serving you properly. In many cases, the primary factor that leads a computer owner to upgrade isn’t damage or repair needs, but rather modern features or technology that aren’t present in an older model. In other cases, however, simple software updates or minor repairs will bring you the features you’re looking for.

Cost Considerations

Naturally, the costs involved will also play a major role in your choice here. Our pros will be happy to give you a price estimate for any of our repair services – you can compare this to the cost of simply upgrading to a new computer model, then factor this into your overall decision. There are many cases where repairs actually increase resale value and ROI, however, so even if you’ve chosen to purchase a new model, you might consider repairing your old one so you can sell it for more.

Malfunction Source

One of the most common questions we’ll try to answer during repair estimates or quotes: The source of the issue or malfunction, which plays a big role in whether repair or replacement is the best route. As we noted above, many software glitches are easy to reverse with the right know-how; there are also certain hardware issues that will be easily repaired for a low cost. In other cases, however, major hardware concerns will cost more to repair repeatedly than a new model would, and we’ll be happy to advise when this is the case.
