How to Protect Your Phone From Water Damage This Summer

Aug 3, 2021

Summer weather is officially here, and it’s time to cool off. Pools, slip’n’ slides, and runs through the sprinklers are great ways to have fun in the summer, but they are dangerous for your phone. Here are three ways to protect your phone from water damage while you beat the heat:

1.  Practice Safe Phone from Water Distancing Six feet might still be too close. Resist the urge to take your phone into the bathroom with you. If you are headed to the pool, keep your phone in a dry spot out of the splash zone. This is the sure-fire way to keep your phone dry.  What if you need your phone at the pool or beach? If you want to swim to your favorite tunes, buy a waterproof Bluetooth speaker and keep your phone in your car or bag. If you have to touch your phone while you’re playing in the water, make sure to dry your hands off first and never handle your phone while standing by the edge of a pool, puddle, or toilet.

2. Waterproof Cases and Pouches If you want to keep your phone safe from accidental spills, splashes, or wet fingers, consider protecting it with a waterproof case or pouch. Otterbox and Lifeproof both make excellent waterproof cases. These allow you to use your phone easily and protect it against short term submersions and splashes.  Waterproof pouches are made for water lovers on the go. They allow you to use your touchscreen while protecting your phone from water damage. Some of them even float, but we still recommend keeping your phone away from water and using the pouch to guard against splashes and wet fingers. If there’s any chance that your phone might become submerged, don’t use a ziplock bag. Water can seep in through the closure.  Sweat is a source of device water damage that is often overlooked. If you have your phone in your pocket or strapped to your arm while you work out, make sure that the case or armband you are using is waterproof.

3. Use a Nano Coating Nanorez is a coating that can be applied to the inside of your phone to protect the electronic components from water damage. The hydrophobic coating can be applied in about five minutes at your local FixIt Mobile store. Nanorez makes the phone water-resistant and can prevent damage from accidental dips. We still recommend practicing step number one, but Nanorez can give you some extra protection and peace of mind. Some phones come with nanocoatings and other waterproof methods built-in. If you are in the market for a new ( or new to you) phone, check out the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. These models have the best water resistance in the industry. They can survive being submerged in up to 13 ft. of water for a maximum of 30 minutes. The Galaxy S20 family of devices and the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are rated for water resistance when submerged in no more than 5 ft. of water for up to 30 minutes.
