Phone Charging Hazards and Safety Precautions, Part 2

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the basics on charging concerns and related damage issues for smartphones. All phone users must charge their devices periodically, and while this is generally a fairly straightforward process, there are a few potential issues or hangups that could create not only device problems, but also safety concerns like fire risks. Part one of this series was mostly about the potential issues at play if you don’t charge your phone properly – today’s part two will dig into several themes you can hit on to ensure you do not have charging or battery problems with your phone.

Designated Equipment

For starters, you must adhere to a major theme we hit on in part one: Using only designated charging equipment for your device. If you have an iPhone, for instance, you should only use a designated iPhone charger that’s been manufactured by Apple.

As we noted previously, there’s a wide aftermarket of chargers and related parts for phones. While these may come cheaper and could even work in many situations, they present risks of ineffective charging, damage and even fire susceptibility in certain extreme cases.

No Unattended Charging or Storage

For items like phones, but also those like laptops, tablets and others – all of which can become quite hot during operation or charging – it’s important to keep location in mind during use or charging. Do not leave such items unattended for long periods, where they could overheat and lead to sparks or fires.

One major areas this extends to: Overnight charging. We recommend against this, plus against charging while you’re napping or dozing.

Preventing Contact or Damage

Prevent any kind of contact with your chargers from metal pieces like necklaces, wristwatches, chains or others. In addition, be sure to keep the charger and device away from areas where physical damage or water damage could occur.

Other Tips

Some other general tips:

• Don’t recharge your phone during a thunderstorm

• Unplug your charger from electrical outlets when they are not in use, especially if they plug directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector

• Periodically inspect chargers for wear-and-tear or outright damage

• Charge devices in shorter bursts rather than longer periods

• When not in use, do your best t shut off battery-powered devices that you do not need on
