The 2020 iPhone Release You May Have Missed ( and One to Look Forward To)

The newest iPhone release might be the bright spot of 2020. The internet has been buzzing with leaks about the forthcoming iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. Keep reading for all the highlights and lowlights of the new flagship, and to hear about the mid-priced release you may have missed.

The iPhone 12

Apple has yet to set a release date for its latest model. Analysts predict we will see it on shelves in September  or October of this year in the U.S. The release has been complicated by supply chain interruptions caused by COVID 19. These problems have mainly affected the 120 Hz screen with a high refresh rate feature-- a technology already found on Android models. The 120 Hz screens are said to be in short supply. This may keep the company from being able to roll them out on the iPhone 12. We won’t know until the official release. In other bad news, it sounds like Apple has opted to keep the wide notch design, and the bezels on the proposed 120 Hz screens don’t compare to the latest Android flagships.

In better news, it’s rumored that the new iPhone 12 and 12 pro models will have a stainless steel frame similar to the iPhone 4. There will also be three different display sizes for consumers to choose from: 5.4, 6.1, and 6.7. Rumor has it that the larger, higher-end phones might come equipped with a triple-lens camera system that uses a laser to calculate depth information for objects in the room.

More concrete information indicates that all the sizes of the iPhone 12 will have OLED screens and an Apple-designed 5-nanometer A14 chip. The A14 chip will be replacing the highly respected A13 found in the iPhone 11. The new chip is supposed to improve speed and efficiency and should help to improve battery life, compensating for 5G connectivity, which drains the battery quicker.

The iPhone SE 2020

This nifty little mid-price phone was released back in April when we were all glued to the news watching the world shut down. Amid all the chaos, this iPhone release went under the radar, but if you are in the market for a new, reasonably priced phone, it deserves your attention.

The iPhone SE 2020 is currently retailing at $399. For that price, you get the power of the A13 chip-- found in the iPhone 11-- in the body of the iPhone 8. It has less RAM than the iPhone 11, but that A13 chip makes it speedy. The screen is smaller than most of Apple’s recent flagships, coming in at 4.7 in., but that’s not a downside for everyone. It runs iOS 13, and like all iPhones, its meant to be updated for several years before giving up the ghost. As a bonus, it also has one of the more respectable cameras you can find on a mid-priced device. In short, it’s a powerful, usable little phone that won’t break the bank. Since it’s been out for several months, you might even be able to score a deal on a refurbished like-new model.
