Understanding the Components of a Smartphone, Part 3

In previous entries to this multi-part blog series, we’ve been going over several of the major components involved with your smartphone. We started with software areas and have now progressed into many of the hardware features that are found on modern smartphones, which have come a long way since their invention a decade and a half ago. In today’s final entry in our series, we’ll go over a few of the more distinct hardware features you’ll tend to find on your smartphone, including a few that might or might not be present depending on which generation you’re using and how recently you upgraded.

Camera Features

In today’s day and age, it would be shocking to find a smartphone that didn’t come with a camera – and usually a pretty solid one at that. Modern smartphone cameras are incredibly high-quality and versatile, including those that allow for professional-level photos in a number of different lens settings. Now, as we noted both above and in part two, this will depend in large part on which phone you own. If you have the latest iPhone or Android model, you’ll have the equivalent of a several-hundred-dollar camera in your pocket; if you’re still working with a five-year-old model, on the other hand, you’ll be a bit more limited.

Accelerometer

One of the components you may or may not find in your smartphone depending on the manufacturer and generation is an accelerometer. This item allows the device to measure how fast it’s moving and in what direction at a given point, which is ideal for various health, direction and similar apps used today. If you regularly use such apps, you should check and confirm the accelerometer is present in your next smartphone (modern options almost always contain them).

Heartrate Monitor

Another feature that’s big for those who use the phone for various health or performance purposes: The heartrate monitor, present in most modern phones.

Fingerprint Sensor

Finally, higher-end smartphones from Apple and various other providers have begun to utilize fingerprint technology for identification and security. Fingerprint tech is used for unlocking many phone screens, for instance, though phones that use it will tend to have other options available if this isn’t something you want to rely on regularly.
